Leadership and Management

PPG’s executive committee consists of three main employees. Michael H McGarry is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PPG. Similarly, Glen E. Bost is the senior vice President and General counsel, and Vincent J. Morales is the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial chief employee of PPG.PPG has worldwide business operations with 38 additional chief employees under their operating committee. McGarry joined PPG during 1981 initially as an engineer at PPG’s Lake Charles, Louisiana chemical complex, he was appointed the CEO of PPG global in 2015 by the board and in 2016 he was announced the chairman of PPG Global. McGarry’s main responsibility include making major corporate decisions, managing the overall operations and resources of PPG, and acting as the main point of communication between the board of the directors and corporate operations. Currently, PPG has 11-member Board of Directors, 10 of them are not employees of the company.

The corporate company culture of PPG is result oriented, with an insistence on innovation. According to their website, PPG prioritizes communication throughout their organization through online communication, web meetings, staff meetings, and online training. PPG also proclaims in demonstrates strong commitment to communication and collaboration on a daily basis in their company. PPG encourages their employees to look for ways to build new processes, revamp existing methods or bring efficiencies into their work while having them abide by the safety standards and high integrity. Teamwork is prioritized by the company and provides their employees congenial atmosphere to collaborate and establish long lasting relationship with other employees and their customers. Most of the executive board consists of employees who have been in PPG for a long time which conveys a very positive message about their corporate environment which encourages employees to grow and provide them with trainings to climb up the corporate ladder given their ability.

Our team believed the following as the major current challenges that PPG’s management faces: PPG currently faces challenges associated in meeting the company goals across the world because of the diverse market it operates under in various countries. The primary reason being the management culture which varies according to the cultural context of the specific country. The major challenges in leadership of PPG is enhancing the diversity as currently the company still operates as a male dominated company with workplace comprising of over 75% men and only 25% representation of women. 

PPG’s Human resources major function involves overseeing various aspects of employment, such as compliance with the labor law and employment standards, administration of employees benefits, and some sides of recruitment and dismissal. PPG’s career page http://global.careers.ppg.com/Why-PPG.aspx boldly highlights the statement “One Global Company, One Rewarding Career” for their prospective employees as a driving statement to choose PPG over their competitors. The dynamic growth strategies and vision is another selling factor of PPG in being able to attract great talent to their company as they are the world’s leading coatings company, serving worldwide. PPG also holds campus recruiting events, and their career website is another major way through which they recruit. Dr. Motley in our class highlighted the selection process which would primarily involve “gathering information on candidates, evaluating their qualification and choosing the right one for the job.” Dr. Motley also highlighted The corporate equality index, which is a report published by the Human rights campaign foundation as a tool to rate American businesses on their treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender employees, customer and investor. PPG according to the corporate index was given a 75 out of 100 and declared as a great company to be at. PPG’s core curriculum for their employees involve: leadership, business acumen, communications, creativity and innovations, and management. PPG provides classroom, on-the job and online learning, as well as support informal learning through mentoring and networking. It also provides financial support to its employees to continue their education to further their career within the organization. PPG also provides Internal job posting programs and announces worldwide career opportunities to all its employees. PPG provides reward programs to its innovative employees for their research and contribution. Awards like : PPG Innova award, PPG’s President’s Award for Technical Achievement, PPG Corporate Fellow, and PPG Collegium.

The major challenge that the Human Resources currently faces is defined as International Human Resources Management, the added difficulty of operating and managing diverse people on the global scale which according to Dr. Chung’s lecture referred to as the need for high cultural sensitivity.
